ARTICULOS DE PRENSA:

Human Rights Council (HRC)

BY: MARIA PAULA ROJAS & SOFIA MERIZALDE

Being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender is prohibited in almost 80 countries out of 196. In 5 of these 80 countries this condition is illegal, punishable and eventually leads to death. People around the world face inequality. Sexual orientation and gender identity are personal decisions of each human being, and should never lead to discrimination or abuse. This topic is very controversial around the world and it is one of the most debated and discussed topics regarding to human rights.

During the commission the Islamic countries opposed on agreeing that lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender should obtain free gender rights. On the other hand the non-Islamic countries agree that everyone should have the right of choosing their gender.

It is fair to say that the majority of countries in the world are currently supporting LGBT rights.

COMISSION: FOOD LOSS & FOOD WASTE

Food loss and food waste is one of the most concerning problems nowadays. Food loss and food waste is food that has been discarded or cannot be use. Countries from Africa and Latin America are suffering form this global issue, and they are pointing at The United States for the lack of help, the excessive production of food, and the way they are managing their wastes. These countries suggest that inadequate food managing, excessive consumption, mistakes in preparations and inappropriate consumption habits are the main causes of food waste, in which the United States is the major contributor. However countries such as Spain and United Kingdom proposed integral solutions, recognizing that all countries in the world are responsible for the enormous amount of food waste.

As a conclusion, all countries should unite and take action, as how the United Kingdom mentioned. Raising awareness to people about the problem, recycling food and reducing production, are some of the points to take in account so the world can see an improvement in the problem.

COMMISSION: BIOETHICS AND HUMAN GENOME

BY: SOFIA MERIZALDE

During the commission, this topic created two completely opposite sides, with contrary thoughts. One side, which included most of the veto powers, for example, USA supported the human genome projects and investigations. On the other hand, nations like Norway and Brazil where against these investigations and would not proceed to change their mind. However three draft resolutions were written, since United States and Russia refused to ally.

COMISSION: LACK OF EDUCATION IN CHILDREN IN THE SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN TERRITORIES.

Education is an important subject to The United Nations and to many countries around the world. In respect to the article 26 of the 1946 declaration of human rights, it is stated that everyone has the right to education, and this is no different in the Sub-Saharan African territories. The topic of this informal debate at the UNICEF commission is the Lack of education in children in the Sub-Saharan African territories. Primary education in this territory is an important issue.

The continent has made significant improvements to this problem, since the rate of education has increased from 58% in 1999 to 76% in 2010, and currently it stands at 87%. Despite these successes, there have been difficulties for everyone to achieve the same level of progress.  The UNESCO has estimated that 31 million children across sub Saharan Africa are still not receiving a primary education.  Some reasons of this are that parents are unable to afford the cost of education (such as fees and uniforms). There is a lack of qualified teachers to work and schools are located too far away for the children to attend in rural areas. Also the culture in the sub Saharan Africa has a chauvinistic perception of education. They believe women shouldn’t have important jobs, so they don’t support them into receiving a good education. The lack of education in this part of the continent is still a work in progress.

The delegates from the different countries have general opinions of supporting women’s right to education. Central Africa does no support this because he outlines the importance of maintaining tradition in their culture, and as a result men should run the country and women should stay at home. On the other hand, France and Spain opposed to Central Africa, by stating that this aspect of the culture should change because women are as important as men. The United States and the United Kingdom are willing to give humanitarian resources for the creation of educational centers for women, also support with any other need.

REFLEXION
